미국 매사추세츠주 보스턴에 본사를 둔 인비크로(Invicro)는 코니카 미놀타(Konica Minolta) 계열사로 전 세계를 위협하고 있는 코로나19의 이해와 치료를 촉진하기 위해 마이크로소프트(Microsoft)와 협력해 코로나19 진단 CT와 엑스레이 데이터세트의 무료 저장소를 구축했다.
이 저장소는 인비크로의 iPACS®와 마이크로소프트 클라우드 플랫폼애저(Azure)의 최신 기술을 활용해 보안과 개인정보 보호, 컴퓨팅 기능을 제공한다. 양사는 이를 통해 전 세계 연구자가 데이터에 액세스하고 코로나19 영상과 임상 데이터를 기여할 것을 독려하고 있다.
이 프로젝트의 초기 파트너로는 존스 홉킨스 대학교(Johns Hopkins University)(미국)와 다른 주요 의료 기관이 참여하고 있다.
존스 홉킨스와의 파트너십에는 전임상 모델에서 폐 병리를 검출하기 위한 첨단 알고리즘 개발이 포함돼 있다. 또한 세계분자영상학회(World Molecular Imaging Society)는 프로젝트 참여를 촉진하고 연계를 독려하기 위해 학회가 보유한 방대한 네트워크에 대한 액세스를 제공할 계획이다.
인비크로 최고경영자(CEO)인 매튜 실바(Matthew Silva) 박사는 “무엇보다 인비크로를 대표해 치명적 팬데믹에 희생된 이들과 그 가족에게 위로의 마음을 전하고 싶다”며 “또한 모든 의료인과 응급 구조대원에게 감사와 존경을 표한다”고 밝혔다.

코로나19 치료법을 밝히기 위한 연구가 날로 진전되는 가운데 과학자와 의사들은 CT와 엑스레이 바이오 마커를 이용해 코로나19 질환 양상과 진행, 치료 반응에 대한 이해를 높이고자 하고 있다.
하지만 연구자와 데이터 과학자가 코로나19의 양상과 진행에 특화된 분석 도구를 발전시키는 데 활용할 수 있는 자원은 제한적이다. 점점 늘고 있는 이 데이터베이스는 중대한 병목 현상을 해결하기 위한 것이다.
헤더 조던 카트라이트(Heather Jordan Cartwright) 마이크로소프트 헬스(Microsoft Health) 제너럴매니저는 “코로나19로 수많은 기관이 공동의 대의를 위해 싸우고자 힘을 합치게 됐다”고 밝혔다.
그는 “팬데믹 기간 중 수집되는 영상 자료와 메타데이터는 연구에 필수적”이라며 “마이크로소프트는 인비크로 및 다른 의료 분야 선두주자와 함께 고도로 안전한 개인 데이터 플랫폼을 구축하고 있으며 이는 전 지구적 과제가 던진 도전을 해결하는 데 도움이 될 것”이라고 기대했다.
‘COVID iPACS 데이터 저장소(COVID iPACS Data Repository)’는 인비크로의 웹 기반 데이터 관리 플랫폼인 iPACS®를 사용하며 애저에서 호스팅된다. 이 시스템은 모든 수신데이터의 익명화와 품질관리를 자동화해주며 유럽 개인정보 보호규정(GDPR), EU 데이터 프라이버시 실드(EU Data Privacy Shield)를 준수해 환자 개인정보 보호 및 데이터 보호 표준이 규제 가이드라인에 부합하도록 한다.

Invicro LLC, a Konica Minolta company, is working with Microsoft to create a free repository of COVID-19 diagnostic CT and X-ray datasets to facilitate understanding and treating this global threat. The repository uses the advanced technologies in Invicro’s iPACS® and the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, offering the required security, privacy, and compute power. This critical mission invites and strongly encourages researchers worldwide to access the data and to contribute COVID-19 images and clinical data.
Early partner in this effort includes Johns Hopkins University (USA) and other leading medical institutions are emerging. Partnership with Johns Hopkins would include developing advanced algorithms for feature detection of pulmonary pathology in preclinical models. In addition, the World Molecular Imaging Society will provide access to its extensive network to promote involvement and encourage alignment with the mission.

As research evolves daily to uncover treatments for this serious disease, scientists and physicians have turned to CT and X-ray biomarkers to better understand COVID-19 disease presentation, progression, and response to therapy. However, there are limited resources for researchers and data scientists to advance analytical tools specific to the presentation and progression of COVID-19. This growing database is intended to address this critical bottleneck.

The “COVID iPACS Data Repository” uses Invicro’s iPACS® web-based data management platform and is hosted on Azure. The system will offer automated anonymization and quality control of all incoming data as well as be compliant with GDPR, EU Data Privacy Shield to ensure patient privacy and data protection standards are in line with regulatory guidelines.
